OK: NRA-Backed Suppressor Bill Becomes Law

On Friday, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed Senate Bill 1743 into law. Also known as the “Landowner’s Hunting Freedom Act,” this bill received the overwhelming, bi-partisan support of the Oklahoma Senate and House with final votes of 44 to 0 and 78 to 3, respectively. SB 1743 allows Oklahoma landowners and their guests to use lawfully possessed suppressors (also referred to as silencers) on firearms for hunting as of Nov. 1, 2012.

SB 1743 was authored by state Sen. Steve Russell (R-45) and state Rep. Leslie Osborn (R-47). This legislation is particularly important as noise complaints are being used more frequently as an excuse to close shooting ranges, informal shooting areas, and hunting lands throughout the country. Additionally, increased use of suppressors will help eliminate many of these complaints and protect hunting and shooting areas well into the future.
